Breed History – As its name suggests, the French Bulldog is closely related to its English and American cousins. The French themselves didn’t actually play much of a role in the breed’s development, although it is one of that country’s most popular dogs to own.
Breed Description – Small but muscular in build, the French Bulldog is instantly recognisable for its bat wing-shaped ears. They can weigh up to 30 pounds, with their size being in proportion to their weight. In addition to this they also have problems with their eyes, spine, hips and for bitches, like in other Bulldogs, they require a caesarean section to give birth, whilst males need help to actually mount and have sex in the first place.
Special Needs – Because of inbreeding, the French Bulldog has many genetic health problems associated with it. They have temperature issues, and can suffer from a lot of breathing problems. They also have issues with cleft palates, and for some dogs this can be deadly as they can die after even moderate exercise.
Owning a French Bulldog – French Bulldogs are both friendly and gentle pets to own. They are a companion dog, and as such require a lot of attention from owners to keep them happy. Precautions must be taken with the dog in hot or cold weather, and it is advised owners keep them in doors as much as possible during times of extreme weather.
