Breed History – Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was originally conceived in America as a herding dog to work in the ranches looking after livestock. The name originated due to their association with Basque sheepdogs which originally came from Australia. The breed’s stock rose quickly after the end of World War 2, and to this day it is both a popular working and family dog.
Breed Description – There is plenty of colour variation amongst this breed, with a wide range of coats ranging from tricolour, blue and red. Depending upon the breeder and which country the dog is born in, there are subtle differences between what is acceptable or not as a standard, although they are all medium sized dogs and of an athletic build.
Special Needs – Due to inbreeding, there are a number of serious health concerns with this dog. These include epilepsy, eye problems, issues with their hips and elbows and back issues.
Owning an Australian Shepherd – Easy to train and obedient, the Australian Shepherd is happiest when being given a task to occupy their time with. They make for excellent family dogs, and are very loving and protective at the same time.
