Breed History – There are many different types of Coonhound, but they are all primarily used as scent and hunting dogs. An American breed of dog, their origins can be traced back to early foxhounds, who proved to be inadequate when hunting bigger game, such as bears and cougars. Bloodhounds were interbred with Foxhounds to create a dog that is both large and string enough to tackle large prey, but also obedient enough to track down an animal and keep it cornered until the hunter arrives.
Breed Description – Coonhounds come in many different varieties; the most common being the Black and Tan, English, Bluetick, Plott Hound, Redbone and Tree Walking Coonhound. There are other, less popular types of Coonhound to be found, but these are not classified as actual breeds, being bred more for their practicality than anything else.
Special Needs – Rugged and generally healthy dogs to own, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections and eye problems. They are dogs that are full of energy, thus need plenty of exercise every day, as well as a balanced diet to help keep them healthy.
Owning an American Eskimo Dog – Whilst primarily a working dog, a lot of people do own a Coonhound as a pet, and they are known to be especially good with children. Thanks to their particularly loud bark, they also make for good watchdogs.
