Breed History – A close relation to the Spitz line of dog breeds, the American Eskimo Dog is a small to medium sized dog that can be found both as a family pet and a working dog, where it is primarily used as a sled dog. In a show of patriotism during the second world war, American owners started to refer to the dog as the American Eskimo Dog and the name has stuck ever since.
Breed Description – Coming in three different sizes, toy, miniature and standard, the American Eskimo dog’s most distinctive feature is its white double coat. This coat needs bushing and combing at least two or three times a week, but aside from that they are fairly low maintenance dog to own.
Special Needs – The American Eskimo dog is a generally healthy breed of dog to own, and is both hardy and long-lived. They are used to cold climates, and do not adapt to heat very well, being happiest in an environment of snow and ice.
Owning an American Eskimo Dog – Caution should be exercised by owners as they can tend to be very wary of and bite strangers if unchecked. However, they are true family dogs, ever loyal and understanding of the family environment, and really do thrive when accepted as part of the group make-up. They make for excellent watchdogs.
