Breed History – One of the largest breeds of dog in the world, the English Mastiff (or simply known as the Mastiff) is an iconic dog that has an evergreen popularity amongst owners. They come from a fighting background, and have been used for bear-baiting and other forms of bloodsport from the Roman times on.
Breed Description – Only the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane are larger, but in terms of mass there is no bigger dog anywhere. It is normal for a male dog to weigh up to an incredible 110kg and be measured 76cm tall at the withers. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest ever Mastiff was from England itself and measured 94cm and weighed 156kg, which is the equivalent to a small donkey.
Special Needs – Because of their size, Mastiffs require special attention to make sure they are healthy and live long lives. It is imperative that they have a soft surface to seep upon or they can develop issues from having their weight rest on a hard floor.
Owning an English Mastiff – Exercise is the key here, and owners should make sure they are always regularly walked to keep them in a good condition. They have a calm personality although can be aggressive towards strangers. Extremely loyal, and good with other animals and children.
