Breed History – Everybody loves a Dachshund, and it is easy to see why. Their distinctive looks have gone a long way to making them one of the most popular breed of dogs today. Of German origin, their short legs and elongated shape have been developed over the years to aid them in burrowing when hunting rabbits and badgers. Interestingly enough, whilst their name is a German word, in that country that are typically known by the name Dackel or Teckel.
Breed Description – With their low and long bodies, Dachshund’s are one of the most recognisable dog breeds. There are three different types of Dachshund, all of which are classified by their type of fur; shirt-haired, long-haired or wire-haired. They are also known to come in two different sizes, standard and miniature. There is a smaller variant, known as Rabbit, but this is not universally recognised.
Special Needs – Spinal issues are a Dachshunds biggest worry, and years of inbreeding haven’t helped their cause. They can become paralysed and you should never treat them roughly or make them jump unnecessarily.
Owning a Dachshund – Playful and stubborn are two words that sum up the Dachshund. This stubbornness means they are very hard to train, and you should be warned that even basic commands can be a challenge to teach them. They are very wary of strangers, and have a tendency to growl or bark at people who they do not trust. They will also become destructive if bored, so special care must be taken to keep them entertained at all times.
