Breed History – Taking its name from the Pomerania region of Central Europe, this small breed of dog has long been the lap dog of choice for upper-class owners worldwide. Possibly the most famous owner of a Pomeranian was Queen Victoria who has a particularly small Pomeranian as a pet. Subsequently, it soon became fashionable to breed smaller varieties of the dog and from there the breed’s popularity took off.
Breed Description – Small in size and stature, the Pomeranian is classed in the toy dog category. They weigh up to 3.5 kg and stand up to 28cm high at the withers. Their coat of fur gives an otherwise slender body more shape, and their fluffy fur is a source of much attraction for the breed.
Special Needs – A generally healthy breed of dog, the Pomeranian will prove to be both a long lived and healthy dog to own. Despite their size they are a very sturdy and resilient dog, and with regular checkups with the vets should be problem free. Pomeranians can live for up to 16 years-old.
Owning a Pomeranian – Obedient and easily-trained, Pomeranians are a joy to own although they have a habit of barking at strangers which can prove troublesome to keep under control. They can be very territorial dogs, and are always very alert to any changes in their environment.
