Breed History – An American breed of dog, the Boston Terrier was first conceived as a fighting dog in the 1870s by mixing English terriers with bulldogs. They were first accepted into the American Kennel Club in 1893 and after a very strong period of popularity in the 1920s, they have held their position to this day as one of the most popular dogs for Americans to own.
Breed Description – The Boston Terriers distinctive ears and muzzle are instantly recognisable, and their compact yet muscular build contributes to give them a strong and intelligent appearance. They weigh up to 25 pounds and stand up to 17in at the withers.
Special Needs – There are quite a few health issues associated with the Boston Terrier. These include problems with their heart, ears, lungs, skin, eyes, stomach and hips. They have a very sensitive digestive system, so you need to be careful of what they eat. Boston Terriers can live up to 13 years-old.
Owning a Boston Terrier – A friendly but stubborn dog, the Boston Terrier needs an assertive owner and is not a dog for the weak-willed. They are intelligent but they can be hard to train unless you are firm with them. Having said that, they do have a pleasant personality, and this has led to them being nicknamed “the gentleman dog”.
