Choosing a German Shorthaired Pointer as a pet

Breed History – Bred for hunting in the 19th century, the German Shorthaired Pointer is one of the country’s most famous canine exports. As well as hunting, the Pointer has also been used as a sled dog in parts of Scandinavia. Today it is both a working and family-orientated dog, happy in either capacity.

Breed Description – Sleek yet powerful, this is a well muscled dog that has plenty of energy. As with other breeds of Pointer, they have webbed feet. As their name suggests, they have a short coat of hair that is easy to maintain.

Special Needs – As they are a highly energetic breed of dog, German Shorthaired Pointers will need plenty of exercise. Although they are strong and healthy dogs, but like any pedigree dog, they are prone to genetic issues, including epilepsy and skin disorders. They can live up to 18 years.

Owning a German Shorthaired Pointer – Intelligent and easy to train, Shorthaired Pointers are well suited to both a family and working life. They make for excellent watchdogs and have a strong hunting instinct, but this may cause problems if you happen to own other smaller pets.

Healthy Pets are pet insurance specialists. Healthy Pets offers an excellent range of dog insurance policies for all breeds of dog, including German Shorthaired Pointer insurance.
