Breed History – For all intents and purposes a miniature Doberman Pinscher (even though they actually came first), this hardy breed of dog was first conceived to help chase down vermin in German towns and cities over 150 years ago, an instinct that is retained to this day.
Breed Description – An athletic dog, Miniature Pinschers are a short haired and small dog that has come about from years of careful breeding. As a working dog, owners of the Miniature Pinscher rarely concerned themselves about breed standards, although in recent years the dog has returned to its roots and standards have been retained.
Special Needs – Generally a healthy dog, they can be prone to skin conditions and on a whole require plenty of exercise. You should keep an eye on then when they are let off their lead, as they have a habit of running off and hunting for rats and other vermin without warning. They are very instinctive dogs with a lot of energy.
Owning a Miniature Pinscher – Easy to care for and a loyal breed of dog, Miniature Pinchers are primarily a working dog, and as such they are easy to train. They have a temper which should be kept in check, and can be extremely protective of their owners, but otherwise make for good family pets. Curiously enough, thanks to their flexible bodies, they can lay in any position and still be comfortable, no matter how awkward they look!
