Choosing a Miniature Schnauzer as a pet

Miniature SchnauzerBreed History – As their name would suggest, Miniature Schnauzers are a smaller version of the standard Schnauzer. This smaller breed of dog was successfully created by crossing its larger cousin with a Poodle or possibly an Affenpinscher. Originally conceived in Germany in the 1800s, their popularity has spread across the world, and they are one of the most recognisable breeds on the planet.

Breed Description – As with its larger cousin, the Miniature Schnauzer has a distinctive head. Big, bushy eyebrows and a flowing beard on its chin lend the dog its attractive personality. Its body is well proportioned and its fur is wiry with a softer undercoat. They tend to grow up to 18in in height and weigh up to 8kg.

Special Needs – Although the Miniature Schnauzer is generally regarded as a healthy breed of dog, they can be prone to problems with bladder stones and diabetes. On the plus side, they are known as non-shedding dogs, which means that fur loss is kept to the minimum, which is a boon if you plan to keep your Miniature Schnauzer in a family environment.

MinatureSchnauzerOwning a Miniature Schnauzer – A playful breed, Miniature Schnauzers are a friendly dog to own, and tend to be easy to train and obedient when given a task to do. They operate best within a family unit, but can be wary of strangers. They tend to be quite loud dogs, and will bark at literally almost anything they see. Be warned!
