Breed History – A breed of gun dog, English Springer Spaniels were traditionally employed by poachers for flushing out and retrieving game. Today, the Springer Spaniel is essentially two dogs – the field-bred dog and the show-bred dog. They are so different in fact, that their lines have been separated for 70 years! Along with their hunting instincts, you are likely to find a working Springer Spaniel employed by the police or army as a sniffer dog, a role in which they excel in.
Breed Description – A medium sized dog, English Springer Spaniels are a well balanced, well proportioned breed. Working dogs tend to have shorter coats than their show dog counterparts. They typically come in black or dark brown colouring with white markings. Males can grow up to 52cm and weigh 25kg.
Special Needs – Being a pedigree dog, there are a number of hereditary problems associated with this breed that owners should be aware of. They are prone to both hip, retinal and elbow dysplasia. Along with other breeds of spaniels, they can also be susceptible to ear infections, and you should make sure you clean them regularly to help prevent any problems in this area.
