Breed History – One of the world’s most instantly recognisable breeds of dog, Boxers were originally of German descent. The name ‘Boxer’ allegedly comes from the stance in which the dog stands, although some historians say the name comes from inbreeding with the smaller Bullenbeisser dog, which was also known as a Boxl in Germany.
Breed Description – Big and stocky in build, these dogs can be intimidating to look at, thanks to their muscular frame and wide, jutting jaw. Adult Boxers can weigh up to 32kg and grow up to 25in for males, with females being slightly smaller and lighter. Average lifespan can reach 13 years.
Special Needs – For some reason, Boxers are particularly prone to cancer, with the disease being the leading cause of death in the breed at a staggering figure that approaches 40%. Cardiac and gastrointestinal problems are also widely spread in the breed.
Owning a Boxer – Be prepared to spend a lot of time playing with your Boxer, as they are a dog that is full of energy and loves nothing more than taking part in ball and chase games. They are of above average intelligence and, if trained correctly, is a very hard-working breed of dog. You should take care to exercise your Boxer every day, as this is vital for a long and healthy life.
